AB OBJECTIVE: Determination of the correlation of cellular and serological
parameters including sICAM 1 by long term analysis from HIV positive non
progressors versus progressors to AIDS. METHODS: 44 patients were
studied at 512 visits (mean: 11), 15 patients developed AIDS within the
observation period (1-73 months, mean 26) (progr.), 29 remained stable
(non progr.). Parameters measured: ELISA: sICAM 1, beta 2-microglobulin
(beta 2m), serum neopterin; flow cytometry: CD4+, CD8+38+, CD3+HLADR+.
Statistics: Comparison of parameters at enrollment, during observation
period and at the end of the follow up (Wilcoxon, Mann-Whitney),
rankcorrelation of sICAM 1 with all parameters (Spearman). RESULTS:
sICAM 1 displayed significant correlation with beta 2m (p < 0.01) and
CD8+38+ (p < 0.001). Comparison of the initial visit (progr. vs. non
progr.) showed differences only within the CD4+ (p < 0.01) and the
CD8+38+ (p < 0.05) cells. Long term observations of non progr. showed
distinct changes of CD8+38+ (p < 0.05), whereas the other parameters
remained stable. Observation of progr. demonstrated clear shifts of all
parameters. CONCLUSIONS: Among the growing number of cellular and
serological factors, currently investigated for their predictive value
in the natural course of HIV-infection, low CD4+ numbers and high
CD8+38+ values seem to have the most importance. The definite value of
sICAM 1, beeing enhanced and correlating well to beta 2m and CD8+38+,
for the prediction of the clinical course is not yet clear.
